For decades, SO36 has been a place of diversity, cultural exchange, and thriving subculture. Having first gained recognition for its legendary punk concerts, the venue today is much more than a music club: from hip-hop, klezmer, and heavy metal to theatre, panel discussions, queer parties, science slams, and inclusive events, SO36 is home to culture in its many different forms. For more than forty years, people from a wide range of backgrounds, lived experiences, and interests have come together here to experience and create culture collectively. At its core, SO36 sees itself as an emancipatory, solidarity-based, and anti-discriminatory space.
Run by the non-profit association Sub Opus 36 e.V., SO36 operates independently and without institutional funding. Its diverse team has its own roots in music, art, literature, and concert and event production, shaping the programme in close dialogue with the needs of cultural practitioners, audiences, and the local Kreuzberg community. Accessibility, participation, and encounters between different social groups are central to its work. The original idea of punk – that the people on stage are no more important than those standing in front of it, and that everyone can create culture themselves – continues to shape the venue to this day.
SO36 is therefore not only an event venue, but an important social and cultural meeting place where networks are formed, self-organisation is made possible, and social cohesion is actively put into practice.
